Laboratory

Health Care Testing and Advancement

The BHS Laboratory has advanced innovative instrumentation complimented by professional expertise in microbiology, pathology, chemistry, hematology and cytology.

Our lab provides blood work and testing throughout the area, for patients, physician offices, and long-term care facilities and is accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and licensed by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA).

Accreditation

Accreditation with the CAP means that our lab receives assistance with adhering to the strictest and most comprehensive scientifically endorsed standards. In addition, all lab results are tested by studious professionals for accuracy. To qualify for accreditation, our lab and staff were put through a rigorous inspection in which any deficiencies were pointed out and required immediate remedy before passing. The lab is reviewed every 2 years to ensure that these standards are maintained.

Lab Services

BHS Laboratory services provides the convenience of having testing done locally and the assurance of high-quality and personal service. From basic blood work to more complex testing and treatment demands, BHS has the clinical laboratory facilities, equipment and professionally trained staff to handle a broad range of needs. A physician order is required to draw blood samples. Most lab tests can be completed during normal business hours without an appointment. Please note that some tests may require fasting. Your physician should indicate if fasting is necessary for the test. In some cases specimens may be collected at home and dropped of at the lab.

Available lab services vary by location, but cover all of the following areas:

  • Blood Bank – Storage of blood samples from donors for patients in need of transfusions.
  • Cytopathology - Determining the exact nature of a disease sometimes requires examination at the cellular level. Cytopathology is committed to this study, and has made great strides in disease and cancer treatment. Pap tests were created from cytopathology research.
  • Dermatopathology - This is a specialty of dermatologists, pathologists, and some other medical professionals that involves the study and analysis of skin disease at a molecular level. It allows doctors to understand exactly what kind of disease is affecting the patient and create a suitable treatment. Highly useful when dealing with skin diseases that appear similar on the surface.
  • Hematology – Analysis of blood cells.
  • Hematopathology - This subsection of pathology evaluates hematopoietic cells in blood, bone marrow, lymph nodes, and other parts of the body. Useful for diagnosing and treating various cancers and disorders.
  • Immunology – Test of the body’s immune system and response to antibodies.
  • Microbiology – Study of abnormal bacteria and fungi to create new drugs and treatments.
  • Molecular Diagnostics - This is a series of techniques designed to examine genetic materials in a patient to diagnose and treat disease, as well as determine if the patient is at risk for other health problems.
  • Pathology – Examination and diagnosis of disease from tissue samples.
  • Special Chemistry – Analysis of enzymes to diagnose problems and prescribe treatments.
  • Surgical Pathology - During surgery, a doctor may take a living tissue sample (with the patient’s permission) which will be analyzed by a surgical pathologist for examination. The results of this exam can help determine how to treat the patient’s disease and whether or not it has spread to other areas.
  • Transfusion Medicine - As the name implies, transfusion is the transference of blood from one person to another. Further study of the practice increases the medical world’s capability to transfuse blood and blood components more easily.
  • Toxicology – Drug testing.
  • Urinalysis – Chemical analysis of urine samples.
