Nuclear Medicine

Innovative Imaging Services

Independence Health System is dedicated to providing advanced and innovative imaging services in our communities, which is why we offer various options for nuclear medicine. As an integral aspect of our diagnostic tools, nuclear medicine is a specialized area of radiology that uses very small amounts of radioactive materials, or radiotracers, to examine organ function and structure. Incorporating information from the latest research and studies, we continually improve our nuclear medicine procedures.

The Benefits of Nuclear Medicine

At IHS, we emphasize the comfort and safety of our patients by providing clear instructions before, during, and after nuclear medicine procedures. Our team is always available to answer any questions and address concerns. Some benefits of the nuclear medicine procedures we perform include:

  • Safe and Effective: We prioritize patient safety without compromising the quality of results. The radioactive materials used are carefully selected to minimize exposure while delivering precise images.
  • Comprehensive: Our nuclear medicine procedures cover a wide spectrum, from analyzing kidney function to visualizing blood flow and heart conditions.
  • Advanced Technology: We utilize modern and evidence-based technology to offer reliable and accurate results.

Types of Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear medicine is comprised of two primary types of tests: imaging tests and non-imaging tests. Imaging tests include Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scans. These techniques allow our specialists to evaluate different body systems like the bones, heart, lungs, gallbladder, liver, kidneys, and thyroid. Non-imaging tests involve assessment of the levels of various radioactive materials in the body.

As every patient's health situation is unique, all procedures and treatments are tailored to individual needs and medical history. Please consult with your doctor for advice specific to your health condition and symptoms. Your doctor will determine if nuclear medicine should be added into your personalized treatment plan.
