Clarion Hospital to Partner with YMCA
Clarion Hospital is partnering with the Clarion County YMCA in a new collaboration called “Healthy Friends.” Effective March 1, the hospital’s own fitness program, Wellness Works, will merge with the services already available at the Y to expand the opportunities for health and wellness.

“Our collaboration with the YMCA is about doing what’s best for our community,” says Clarion Hospital C.E.O. Edward Hannon. “We’re going to help the Y expand its services, and they’re going to help us keep the community healthy.”

The hospital’s fitness trainer position will be transferred to the YMCA so that the facility can offer customized exercise plans for each member. Additionally, the trainer will work with patients who have completed rehabilitation programs, coordinating the continuation of their care plans.

“This will allow us to take a more active role in helping those who are recovering from fractures, sports injuries, and surgery,” explains Mike Ebert, program director of the Clarion County YMCA. “The hospital’s rehab department is looking at our equipment and is planning to supplement what we have to optimize the tools available here at the Y.”

Current Wellness Works members will be transferred to the Healthy Friends program. Healthy Friends members will receive the same benefits that come with any Y membership: reduced class fees, free childcare (during posted hours), and a full range of fitness equipment and activities.

According to Paul Ion of Clarion, a former Wellness Works member who has joined the YMCA, “It’s great here. They keep updating. The atmosphere is nice, not dingy.” He also appreciates the companionship of other members. “I see a lot of people – usually ten working out at any time. The comradery is great.”
For more information, call the YMCA at (814) 764-3400, or stop by their facility on Route 322 toward Strattanville.

Clarion Hospital is also working with Highmark to bring some new options in community education that will include topics like nutrition, relaxation, and smoking cessation. More information will be available this spring.
