Education days are paid days that the nurse externs are scheduled to spend time "learning" at the hospital. The nurse externs, based on interest and what they are learning in school, choose topics for education days.
Education days provide an opportunity for classroom lecture as well as skills labs where new skills can be performed on mannequins. The hospital's Nursing Education Department maintains computer programs for individual or group learning as well as programs to help prepare the nurse extern to take the State Board Exam.
Education Days include:
- Study days (assisting externs to prepare for upcoming exams at school)
- Nursing Grand Rounds
- Ongoing nursing in-services
- NCLEX Bingo
- Clinical practice
- Clinical interactive practice utlizing the simulation mannequin, "Willy Makit." (Students practice assessment, monitoring, contacting a surgical resident, and assisting to insert a chest tube.)
