HOSPITAL FOUNDATION NAMES SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

Clarion Hospital Foundation recently awarded one $1,000 Dr. John E. Brooks Memorial Scholarship, two $1,000 Joseph and Helen Miller Scholarships, and a $1,000 Frances Shope Memorial Scholarship to four area students.
Jillian Rhoads has received the Brooks Scholarship. She is a 2007 graduate of Clarion Limestone High School. She has been accepted to Gannon University and plans to be an orthopedic surgeon.
While in high school, Rhoads was a member of the National Honor Society and was involved in cross country, basketball, and track.
The Miller scholarships were awarded to Michael Douthit and Stephanie McCauley.
Douthit is a 2007 graduate of Clarion Area High School. He will be attending the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) School of Pharmacy. He will pursue a Doctor of Pharmacy degree.
While in high school, Douthit was active in band and earned the distinction of Eagle Scout and Assistant Scout Master. He was also active in his youth group and went on five mission trips, including three Habitat for Humanity projects.
The second recipient of the Miller Scholarship, Stephanie McCauley is an alumna of Redbank Valley High School. She graduated in 2004 and has been attending the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy.
McCauley hopes to become a pharmacist, specializing in oncology. She has had first-hand experience in a cancer-center environment through her volunteer work at Clarion Hospital’s pharmacy.
The annual Dr. John E. Brooks Memorial Scholarship was created in the doctor's memory by his wife Mary Brooks and other family members. The Joseph and Helen Miller Scholarship and the Frances Shope Scholarship were created by the Foundation to honor and memorialize these individuals. Applicants are judged on their motivation and desire to pursue health care careers and on community involvement and academic excellence.
The final scholarship recipient is Dennis Meals. A physical therapist assistant, Meals plans
to attend Slippery Rock University in pursuit of a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree.
Meals has worked in rehabilitation for 10 years and is employed at Clarion Rehabilitation Services. He graduated from Union High School in 1974 and worked for 20 years as a heavy equipment operator. In 1997, he received an associate’s degree from Butler County Community College and became a physical therapy assistant.
Meals is active in his community, serving on the Union school board. He is the president of the Southern Clarion County Little League and is on the Pastor Relations Committee at the Rimersburg Methodist Church.
This final scholarship is named in the memory of Fran Shope. Miss Shope was a long time supporter of Clarion Hospital. She was a member of both the Clarion Health System Board of Directors and the Foundation Board. As such, she spent many years as the chair of the scholarship committee. Miss Shope’s desire to affect students striving for greatness is why this scholarship is named for her. An endowment has been established by Clarion Hospital to continue her work.
